Shake it up. Start conversations in novel ways.

© Rhoberta Shaler, PhD

Want to wake things up and create more engaging conversation? Today I was reminded of a talk I gave a few years ago, so I thought I'd write about it today. What I was talking about was the habitual greeting:

"How are you?"

So many times we ask or hear that question and it goes right by us. So, does the answer! That is simply meaningless and a waste of energy and relationships.

How could we create a more engaging start to a conversation? A start that shows genuine interest in the person AND the answer to your question. So, how about this one:

"What's the most exciting thing that happened to you in the last week?"

"What's really floating your boat or flipping your skirt these days?"

Don't you think that a new approach would shake things up a bit? When you upstage a habit, there is a wonderful moment of surprise. I invite you to try this tomorrow. I'll bet you will have better conversations that actually create meaningful interaction.

I'd love to hear your results. Come back and write a comment below.

Going to experiment with this one and see what responses I recieve. Will make a difference to the usual mundane polite and expected ways of speaking.
