q-100My grandfather has just died and all evidence points to that he killed himself.

When my father found out, he started bawling, but I was perfectly fine! This was my absolute favorite grandpa as well! I did almost cry but it wasn’t hard holding it back, and the at the most is I’m going to miss my grandfather. Shouldn’t I be crying too??? Or am I some sort of sadist? Is this normal!?

a-100Hello,

I am sorry for your loss.

It is likely that you cannot yet take in this loss and that your response may be delayed. Sometimes it takes a while for it to sink in that you will not see your grandpa again in this life.

You said you almost cried which means you did feel something. Are you usually an emotionally expressive person?

Is there any chance that you watched your father’s raw emotion and you didn’t want to do the same? Sometimes, people have a way of stopping their feelings from emerging naturally. Did you have a judgment about your father’s response?

It is not likely that you are a sadist. A sadist likes to see people and animals hurting, takes pleasure in the pain of others. It is a general response for them, not a one-time thing. Is that you?

I’m sorry for the delay in answering your question. Has your loss caught up with you yet?

I wish you well.
